“He was fine when I laid him down for his nap. When I went to check on him, he was turning blue.”

I was crying and hysterical at the hospital. My son had stopped breathing in his sleep and I was losing my mind. Cross was still in Miami, and I needed him. I was freaking the fuck out. He was still struggling to breathe when we made it to the hospital.

“Stop crying, Heaven. The doctors have him stabilized and breathing. They’re running test. Come over here and sit with me.”

Mrs. St. Croix happened to be at the house helping out around the house per Cross’ request. He swore I couldn’t be home alone taking care of the kids. I was dead set against it, but was grateful for her being there with me. When I found my baby, I instantly panicked. My ass was so hysterical that I couldn’t even give him CPR. She snatched him from me and went right into action resuscitating him.

“I cannot live if my baby dies. Jamaica, I will not survive another one of my babies passing away.”

“That’s enough! You will not speak death over my grandson. He is a St. Croix, and he will be just fine. Remember everything you speak negatively can manifest itself. We only speak positive things over this family. My grandson, Cross St. Croix Jr., will be just fine!”

Jamaica spoke so firmly, and I quickly calmed down. I needed to hear that because Lord knows I felt like I had no hope. When you lose a child, you lose a part of your mind that others don’t understand. Jamaica and I walked back inside the room where my son was with the nurse who was checking his vitals.

“Hey, mom. We found out that your son had an asthma attack while sleeping. His oxygen levels are extremely low.”

“I don’t understand. He just had a five-month check-up, and everything was fine.”

“That’s the thing with asthma. It’s extremely tricky, and you never know when an attack will come about. We’re going to keep him a couple of days until we can get his oxygen levels up. Of course, you will have to follow up with his Pediatrician. We’re going to be sending you home with meds, and of course, a breathing machine so that you can give him treatments.”

“Okay. Thank you so much.”

“See I told you he was going to be just fine.” Jamaica wrapped her arms around me and hugged me tightly. At that moment, I was so happy to have her here with me. She made things so much easier.

My phone started to ring, and I knew it was my momma or my daddy. They had been calling me nonstop since I told them what was going on. When I answered the phone, I just wanted to let her know the baby was okay. Instead, she was telling me that someone had burned down my shop. The shit broke my heart. The devil was too damn busy for me. This shit happened at the wrong time.
